Chronic Pain
Most patients suffering from Chronic Pain have visited a Physical Therapist at least once. The Physical Therapy Goals for the patient suffering from chronic pain are different from the 'usual' therapy patient's.
When we evaluate a 'Pain Patient', our goals are to first identify your needs. Next, we discuss the physical aspect of your pain. That is to say, what are the physical causes of pain, and how can we address them. The plan does not end there. It is important to also look at your work and home lifestyle habits. There are often simple things you can alter in your daily routine which may decrease your overall pain.
Treatment often includes some type of 'hands on' therapy, as well as directed and specific exercises are that designed to target areas of your body that may be strengthened or stretched to help reduce your pain.
There are other tools that may reduce your pain depending on your condition. The Cold Laser is a type of laser that doesn't produce heat. It is used to reduce pain and inflammation and may be safely used directly over most body areas. So, the area that is in pain is directly treated. The other device sometimes used is called the ATM2. It is used to treat pain motion. For example, if your back hurts when you bend or turn, this machine may help retrain your muscles to work correctly, thereby reducing your pain. Pictures of these devices are found on the 'Orthopedics' page.
If you suffer from chronic pain, a few visits to physical therapy will most likely not 'fix' everything. Our goals are to reduce the pain to a manageable level, and to improve your daily function.
